Baptism - An Introduction
Introduction
to Baptism: Founded in 1609, the Baptists were a group of Puritans
who fled from prosecution in England to Holland under the leadership of
John Smyth. This group of Protestants
were influenced by the doctrine of another reforming church called the
Anabaptists, who did not believe in infant baptism. Baptists place emphasis
on adults confirming their faith in Christ by a baptism of total immersion
of the body in water. This group of Protestants is fundamentalist, and
emphasizes the reading of Scripture and regular observance of the Lord's
Supper. This group comprises the largest Protestant family of churches
in America.
