Introduction
to Bhakti Hinduism
page 2
Vishnu, the other principal god with Shiva, is the maintainer and protector
of the world, and combines a range of qualities and characteristics by
appearing in a series of incarnations as avatars. In the Bhagavad Gita,
Vishnu appears as Krishna to teach Arjuna (his disciple) the path of Bhakti
Yoga through devotion to Krishna (himself). In the Ramayana, Vishnu appears
as Rama, who epitomizes the virtues of self-denial and dedication as a
model king.
