Congregationalists - An Introduction
Congregationalists,
now members of the United Church of Christ, were the Puritans. Originally
from northwestern Europe, these Protestants
wanted to reform the Protestant Reformation. A group of Puritans, known
as the Pilgrims, set off from England in a ship called the Mayflower to
start a new life, and church, in America. Puritans then set up colonies
and churches in New England.
In 1957, the Congregational Christian churches merged with the Evangelical and Reform Church (Calvinist body) to form the United Church of Christ. This church is now one of the progressive churches, which emphasizes the personal freedom of the individual to interpret Scripture and to worship God in their own way.
