Saint Augustine - An Introduction
Saint Augustine
(Aurelius Augustinus) (354-430), a North African bishop of Hippo Regius
in what is now Algeria, is one of the most influential theologians in
Christian history. Augustine's Writings
established a precedent in acknowledging mystical experience as an important
aspect of spiritual practice. His Writings show a shift in emphasis from
Faith (in God's Promise), to Will (God's intention for a person), to perfect
Love (in loving God, God's love is reciprocated and salvation is assured).
The emphasis changes from theological to experiential, and from faith
to conscious awareness.
