St. Francis - An Introduction
Saint Francis
(1182-1226) is probably the most popular and best known of the Christian
mystics. During a visit to Rome he had a vision of Christ, who told him
to rebuild the Church. Francis was known for his renunciation of worldly
life, and for his work among the lepers and the poor. His simplicity,
charity and, love for nature have set an example for the Christian brotherhood.
Francis is the founder of the order of the Friars Minor (OFM), which has
since been divided into liberal, moderate, and conservative wings. The
Pranciscan orders are founded upon principles set forth by St. Francis.
