St. John - An Introduction
Saint John (1542-1591) was a mystic and reformer who was a member of the
Carmelite order. His poems are recog- nized as among the finest in the
Spanish language. Saint John is popularly known for his explanations of
the "Dark night of the Soul," the struggles one must go through
in purifying oneself and receiving God's grace.
