The Unification Church - An Introduction

The basic belief of the Unification Church is that humanity is to be restored to its original perfect state by a principle of indemnity, by which all sin and wrong in the world must be put right at the proper time.

The Reverend Sun Myung Moon teaches that the coming of a new Messiah is near and will occur in Korea. This second coming will complete the restoration, and the Messiah will marry a new Eve, found a sinless humanity, and establish God's kingdom on earth. Members of this church are directed to follow puritanical sexual mores, since the misuse of love is believed to have been the original sin of the Archangel, Adam, and Eve.

The Church is officially named The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity. Rev. Moon communicates with Moses and Buddha, among other spiritual masters, as he "travels in the spirit world." From Korea, the church has spread to over 120 countries, including Japan, Western Europe, and the United States.

Moon's lectures about the revelations he has received are in his text, Won-li Kang Mon (Lectures of Principle). Adam and Eve (in the Holy Bible) are considered the first parents, and because they sinned, a second set of parents came to indemnify the fall of mankind and establish the true family ideal lost by Adam and Eve. Jesus came as the second Adam. He was not God himself, but he was related to God "as the body is related to the mind". Because Jesus' contemporaries did not support him, and therefore he did not marry, he could only complete a spiritual restoration through the Holy Spirit, who played the role of Eve. The material world has remained under the power of Satan to the present day, but Satan will soon be vanquished by the new Messiah.

Reverend Moon arranges marriages between members of the church and may unite hundreds of couples in matrimony in mass ceremonies in order to help create harmony among different nationalities, races, and religions of the world.
